If you have taken out insurance with an unregistered insurer, you must lodge a return and pay duty.

Your return and payment are due by the 21st of the month after you paid your premium, for example, if you paid your premium in July 2023, your return is due by 21 August 2023.

  1. Contact us

To begin the lodgement process, please email returns@sro.vic.gov.au and outline your circumstances so we can establish if you are liable to pay insurance duty.

If you are liable, you must complete the registration form.

  2. Register online

Once you complete the online registration form, we will register you and send a confirmation letter. You need this letter to complete your monthly lodgement.

  3. Complete and lodge return

Returns must be lodged using the online SmartForm.

To complete your return, you must provide:

    • customer name
    • customer number
    • the period covered by the return
    • the amount of duty payable for the return period.

Complete your return and pay your liability using the payment details that will be displayed onscreen.

    Lodge and pay your return

You can pay by VISA, MasterCard, BPAY, or electronic funds transfer (EFT). Please use the payment reference shown onscreen to ensure your payment is allocated to the correct return.

A card payment fee of 0.45% applies to all credit card transactions.

  4. Save a copy of your return

Once you have completed your return, you can download and save a copy for your records. This copy includes the payment details in case you want to pay your duty after you have submitted your return.
