If you're an employer in Victoria who pays payroll tax, you need to lodge a return every month.

Reporting how much you paid in wages and calculating how much tax you owe is called self-assessing your liability. You do this online using PTX Express.

You must report your wages every month, even if you don’t owe any payroll tax for that month. You must pay by the 7th of the next month (or the next business day).

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you lodge your monthly return.

  1. Lodge your monthly return

    • Log in to PTX Express.
    • From the menu, choose ‘Lodge Monthly Return’.
    • Select the month (e.g. 1 January to 31 January).
    • Enter your taxable wages information and follow the instructions to lodge your return.
  2. Make your payment

After lodging, you'll see your payment options.

    • Use the reference number to pay the tax.
    • Make sure to pay by the 7th of the next month (or the next business day).

Next Steps

After you lodge, you can edit your return or request a refund if you need to.

Fix errors with a replacement return

If you make a mistake, you can lodge a replacement return for that month.

  • Log in to PTX Express.
  • Navigate to ‘Lodge a monthly return’ and select the relevant return period (e.g. 1 January to 31 January).
  • Follow the instructions to enter your correct wage details.

Request a refund

If you have overpaid payroll tax, you can:

  • apply for a refund using PTX Express
  • contact us and ask to use the overpaid amount for a future return.
