Freedom of Information (FOI) refers to the public right to access information held by government. This cornerstone of our democracy is an integral element of open and accountable government and supports the principles that:

  • people have a general right to know what information government holds about them
  • well-informed people are more likely to become involved in both policy making and government
  • a government open to public scrutiny is more accountable.

The Victorian Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the Act) commenced on 5 July 1983 and became fully operational on 5 July 1984.

All agency employees are expected to comply with the Act’s objectives and obligations. The Victorian Government has instructed departments and agencies to interpret the Act in a manner that reflects a willingness to disclose information.
