Lodge a return as an insured person

Steps to lodge a duty return if you used an unregistered insurer.

Background information

If you have taken out insurance with an unregistered insurer, you must lodge a return and pay duty.

Your return and payment are due by the 21st of the month after you paid your premium. For example, if you paid your premium in February 2026, your return is due by 21 March 2026.

Step 1: Contact us

To begin the process, please email returns@sro.vic.gov.au and outline your circumstances so we can confirm whether you are liable to pay insurance duty.

If we confirm you are liable, you must complete the registration form.

Step 2: Register online

Once you complete the online registration form, we will register you and send a confirmation letter. This letter includes details you need before you can complete your monthly lodgement.

Step 3: Complete and lodge return

To complete your return, you must provide:

  • customer name
  • customer number
  • the period covered by the return
  • the amount of duty payable for the return period.

Complete your return and pay your liability using the payment details shown onscreen. Use the payment reference to ensure we allocate your payment to the correct return.

You can pay by VISA, MasterCard, BPAY or electronic funds transfer. A card payment fee of 0.45% applies to all credit card transactions.

Step 4: Save a copy of your return

Once you have completed your return, you can download and save a copy for your records. This copy includes the payment details in case you want to pay your duty after submitting your return.
